Case Study: Developing an end-to-end Strategic Plan and Innovation Value Chain


Challenge

The Agrifood Innovation Institute (AFII) is an ANU innovation institute whose purpose is to improve linkages between research institutes and industry. As a newly created institute, AFII sought assistance with their end-to-end strategic planning: establishing the strategic intent, defining success indicators and developing their evaluation framework.  

Solution

Smarterknowledge engaged with over 40 stakeholders to define an overall approach to their strategic plan and evaluation framework.  

Consultation provided repeating themes about how new investment could be maximised, while fully leveraging existing investment: 

  • The innovation value chain was formalised in response to consultation to provide resource optimisation and to maximise agriculture innovation ​ 
  • The innovation value chain could then be used to monitor growth and maturity​ of innovations  

Result

Using this evaluation process, AFII was able to successfully define their performance measures so they could clearly demonstrate their impact. The evaluation framework recorded success indicators and performance measures and the process identified what data was required to quantifiably demonstrate impact against strategic goals.
